Varsity Volleyball Defeats Richmond in First Round of Sectionals

The varsity volleyball team went to 5 sets in a hard-fought match against Richmond in the first round of the sectional tournament. The first set started out point-for-point, with both teams tied 19-19 late in the set. GC was able to push for a lead of 23-20 with Savvanna Riall at the serving line. The Cougars took set one 25-21. Richmond was in control of set two, starting with an early lead of 11-5. The Cougars came within two points of the Red Devils, then Richmond extended their lead to 21-15. The Cougars scored the next 6 points and tied the game 21-21. GC took their first lead in the game at 23-22, but Richmond scored the next 3 points and took the second set 25-23. Greenfield-Central stormed back in the third set and jumped up to leads of 18-13 and 22-17. The Cougars closed out the third set 25-18. The fourth set was an absolute battle. The sectional atmosphere brought out the best in both teams, and it was point-for-point the entire set. The teams found themselves tied 16 times. In the closest set the Cougars have played this season, Richmond was able to make the final push to win the set 31-29 and tie the match 2-2. Both teams were fighting for the chance to continue their seasons. After the fourth set, it was still anybody's game. GC made some defensive adjustments, and the Cougars took control of the game in the fifth set, closing it out with a 15-7 win over Richmond. GC played tough and worked together to grab the first win on the road to the sectional championship.
