GC Tennis Wins Sectionals with 3-2 Victory Over Mt. Vernon The Greenfield-Central Cougars clinched the sectional title with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Mt. Vernon, led by a dominant sweep. The Cougars only gave up 6 games total in the three singles matches. At No. 2 singles, Alex Michalek set the tone early, taking the first point for GC with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win. Michalek has been a rock for the Cougars all season, consistently setting the tone with early points. His quick and decisive win marked yet another night where he delivered the team’s first point, providing key momentum. Nathan Roberts followed at No. 1 singles, delivering a statement performance. He rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over an opponent he had previously gone three sets with—highlighting just how much Roberts has grown and improved throughout the season. Freshman Andrew White sealed the match for the Cougars at No. 3 singles, securing the deciding point with a strong 6-2, 6-2 victory. In doubles, both Cougar teams battled through highly competitive matches, but came up just short. The No. 1 doubles team of Jacob Welch and Kasen Jarnecke showed significant improvement against a very tough doubles pair but were unable to take momentum away from Mt. Vernon. At 2 doubles, Ethan Ortwein and Raleigh Gantt came out strong, dominating the opening set, but Mt. Vernon answered back to take the next two sets, finishing the night 3-2. The Cougars will next play in the regional against the New Castle winner at Mt. Vernon on Tuesday.
