Cougars Fall to Shelbyville 5-2

Greenfield-Central Varsity Cougars dropped a tough one to Shelbyville Varsity Golden Bears on Thursday, falling 5-2. The Cougars struck first in the third inning when Brady Johnson delivered an RBI single to score the opening run. Hayden Kidd followed up with a run-scoring single of his own to give GC an early lead. Shelbyville responded in the bottom half of the third with a big inning, capitalizing on a wild pitch and a two-run home run by Aiden Smith to take a 3-2 lead. They would add two more insurance runs before the final out. Hayden Kidd led the Cougars at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Johnson added a hit and an RBI. Gavin Markus started on the mound and took the loss, striking out five over five innings while allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and five walks. Steven Walker pitched a clean sixth inning in relief. Shelbyville’s Dalton Jones went the distance, allowing just five hits and two runs (one earned) across seven innings to earn the win. He struck out two and walked two. Aiden Smith led Shelbyville’s offense with a two-run homer, while Grantland Fitzgerald swiped three of the team’s four total stolen bases. Greenfield-Central will look to bounce back in their next matchup.
