Cougars Fall to Mt. Vernon in Game Two, 5-2

By Mitch Gibson | May 16, 2025 10:24 AM

Zander Cobb sparked the Cougars early, driving in the game’s first run with a single in the opening inning. After Mt. Vernon responded with a solo homer to tie it in the bottom half, Carter Ellis helped Greenfield-Central regain the lead with an RBI groundout in the second, making it 2-1. However, a costly error in the bottom of the second allowed Mt. Vernon to plate three unearned runs, shifting momentum and putting the Cougars behind 4-2. The Marauders added one more in the third on a sacrifice fly to cap off the scoring. Offensively, the Cougars managed just four hits—one each from Brady Johnson, Cobb, Dylan Luther, and Gavin Markus. Cobb and Ellis each drove in a run, and Gage Handlon swiped a bag in the loss. On the mound, Gavin Markus took the loss, allowing five runs (only two earned) over two innings. Carson Richardson tossed a scoreless inning in relief, and Steven Walker was sharp over the final three frames, striking out seven while giving up just two hits and no runs.
