Greenfield Central’s girls’ tennis team competed with grit and determination Thursday evening but came up short in a 0-5 loss to New Palestine. Though the final score doesn’t reflect it, the match was highly competitive, with three of the five courts going to decisive third sets. At No. 1 singles, Kate Gilkison started strong with a 6-2 first set win. Her opponent responded with consistent play in the second and third sets, edging out the match 5-7, 4-6. Claire Davidson battled at No. 2 singles but was unable to find her rhythm, falling 2-6, 3-6. At No. 3 singles, Tanessa O’Neal faced a challenging opponent and was defeated 0-6, 0-6. In doubles play, both GC teams pushed their matches to the limit. At No. 1 doubles, Kaydence Ham and Anna McQueeney captured the first set 7-5 before New Pal rallied, taking the next two sets 6-0, 6-3. The No. 2 doubles team of Lauren Page and Lucy Stewart went the distance, responding to a 4-6 first set loss with a 6-4 second set win. The final set was tightly contested, ending in a 6-7 (2) tiebreak loss. Despite the 0-5 result, GC showed resilience across the lineup. The close matches and third-set efforts reflect a team capable of competing at a high level, with progress to build on as the season continues.
