Greenfield-Central Varsity Cougars dropped a tough one on the road Tuesday evening, falling 5-2 to the Mooresville Pioneers. The Cougars struck first in the top of the 1st inning. Jacob Welch reached on an error and later scored on a line-drive single by Hayden Kidd. In the 2nd, Greenfield-Central added another run when Dylan Luther’s sacrifice fly scored Gavin Markus, who had reached on a hit-by-pitch. Brady Martin got the start on the mound, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing four runs (two earned) while striking out three. Carter Ellis pitched the 6th, giving up one earned run with one strikeout. Despite taking a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 3rd, the Cougars couldn’t hold off the Mooresville offense. A pair of Cougar errors and timely Pioneers hits led to runs in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th innings, as Mooresville pulled ahead for good. Offensively, Greenfield-Central managed four hits, with Hayden Kidd leading the way going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jacob Welch and Brady Johnson each added a hit, and Luther tallied the team’s only RBI via sacrifice fly. The Cougars move to 12-9 on the season. They’ll look to bounce back in their next outing as conference play continues.
