Greenfield-Central Varsity Cougars wrapped up their Hoosier Heritage Conference series in style, defeating the Yorktown Tigers 9-4 on Wednesday to secure a series sweep. The Cougars opened the scoring in the third with a sacrifice fly from Cooper Safford. Yorktown responded in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead, but the Cougars tied it in the fifth when Hayden Kidd was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Greenfield-Central took full control in the sixth, putting up four runs. Dylan Luther roped a two-RBI single, Brady Johnson added a sacrifice bunt RBI, and Safford followed with another RBI single to give GC a 6-4 lead. Three more runs in the seventh sealed the deal for the Cougars. Freshman Brady Martin was outstanding on the mound once again, tossing 4.0 innings while allowing just one earned run and striking out one. Steven Walker secured the win for the Cougars and RHP Carson Richardson secured the save in relief, closing out the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit. At the plate, Luther, Johnson, and Ethan Ortwein each collected two hits. Luther and Safford drove in two runs apiece, and the Cougars were aggressive on the basepaths, swiping five total bases—two from Jacob Welch. Greenfield-Central improves to 6-5 on the season and will host New Palestine next Tuesday.
