Greenfield-Central Varsity Cougars came out on top in dramatic fashion Tuesday night, walking off Yorktown 7-6 in a Hoosier Heritage Conference matchup. Down by three runs entering the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars rallied behind key hits from Hayden Zellers and Hayden Kidd before Cooper Safford sealed the win with a walk-off RBI single. Zellers had a big night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two stolen bases. He tied the game early with a steal of home in the first and later jump-started the final-inning rally with a two-run double. Kidd followed with a sacrifice fly to even the score, setting the stage for Safford’s clutch hit to left that brought home the winning run. Gavin Markus started on the mound, striking out seven over 5.2 innings. Walker Miller pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Jacob Welch also tallied two hits and scored twice for the Cougars, who racked up eight hits and four stolen bases. Greenfield-Central heads to Yorktown tonight for Game 2 of the series.
