Greenfield-Central came up just short in a tight 2-3 match against a tough Alexandria team on Thursday. Alexandria returned six of seven players from a sectional winning squad that defeated the Cougars 4-1 last season, making this a great opportunity to showcase how much the team has grown since then. At No. 1 singles, Kate Gilkison delivered a dominant performance, winning 6-1, 6-0. No. 2 singles Claire Davidson showed grit and composure, pulling out two hard-fought tiebreakers to secure a 7-6, 7-6 victory. At No. 3 singles, Tanessa O’Neal battled through a marathon match that stretched over three hours. After taking the first set 6-2, she dropped the next two 2-6, 4-6 in a tough match filled with long rallies and relentless effort. The No. 1 doubles team of Anna McQueeney and Kaydence Ham fought back after a slow start, rebounding from a 2-6 first-set to win the second 6-3. The third set was back and forth before the pair fell just short in a third set tie break losing 6-7. At No. 2 doubles, Lauren Page and Lucy Stewart continued to show improvement in just their second match together, narrowly falling 4-6, 5-7 in a tightly contested battle. Despite the final score, the Cougars showed significant growth, resilience, and determination against a strong opponent. On the jv side, the girls pushed themselves and fought hard to pull off the 6-5 win improving to 2-0. Audrey Hart, Kate Baker, Bella Hurst, Chloe Takach, Aubrey Manning, Janessa Gannon, Abby Reed, Lillian Stoots, Hannnah Bell all won for jv.
