The Greenfield-Central girls track and field team wrapped up its season at the IHSAA State Finals with several memorable performances, highlighted by a school record from Juliann Jones and valuable state meet experience gained by a talented young distance group. Jones delivered one of the top performances in program history in the long jump. The senior placed 10th in the state with a school-record leap of 18-03.75, capping off an outstanding season that saw her continually raise the standard for Greenfield-Central athletics. Competing against the best jumpers in Indiana, Jones proved she belonged among the state's elite and closed her high school career with a performance that will stand among the best in school history. Over the course of the season, Jones improved the school record by an incredible 8.75 inches, a testament to her dedication and growth throughout the year. The senior, coming off of 2 ACL tears in as many years, has more than proven she belongs among the state's elite athletes. On the track, freshman Mia Brinkruff represented the Cougars in the 1600-meter run, clocking 5:16 against one of the strongest fields in the state. While the result may not fully reflect the tremendous season she put together, the experience of racing on Indiana's biggest stage provides a foundation that will benefit her throughout the remainder of her career. Brinkruff's impact on the program was historic, as she lowered the school's 1600-meter record by 10 seconds during her freshman season. The Cougars also qualified a young 4x800-meter relay team for the state finals. The quartet of Adalyn Cole, Josie Kinnaman, Alexis Kerkhof, and Mia Brinkruff finished 24th in 9:41 while competing against the state's premier distance programs. Adalyn Cole and Josie Kinnaman have both done a fantastic job of leading the freshmen this year in these high-pressure races. This group has built up a lot of chemistry and has great momentum going into next season. One of the highlights of the relay came from Kinnaman, who delivered a tremendous 2:23 split, bringing her best time from the previous 2 seasons down by more than 5 seconds. The junior once again demonstrated the toughness and consistency that made her one of the team's leaders throughout the season and helped keep the Cougars competitive against some of Indiana's fastest teams. The 4x800 relay group also made history throughout the season. By the time their year concluded at the state finals, the quartet had lowered the school record by an astounding 11 seconds, showcasing the depth and growth of Greenfield-Central's distance program. Beyond the results, one of the biggest victories for the program came in the experience gained by its young athletes. Freshmen Mia Brinkruff and Alexis Kerkhof both had the opportunity to compete on the sport's biggest stage, an opportunity that few athletes receive so early in their careers. The lessons learned from racing under the pressure and atmosphere of the state finals will pay dividends for years to come as they continue developing into leaders of Greenfield-Central's distance program. While the season has come to an end, the future remains bright. With returning talent, state-level experience, and a growing culture of excellence, the Cougars leave the track this year with plenty of momentum heading into next season.
