The Cougars won the 2026 Hoosier Heritage Conference meet, ending Mount Vernon's five year winning streak. Team Scores: 1) Greenfield-Central 133, 2) Mt. Vernon 122, 3) New Palestine 85, 4) Delta 74.50, 5) Yorktown 72, 6) Pendleton Heights 71, 7) New Castle 37.50, 8) Shelbyville 29 Unfortunately the Marauders were missing their star athlete, Sebastian Sprague, due to an early season injury. Sprague, as a junior, was All-State in 4 events, and is committed to DePaul next year. This year's County Athlete of the Meet from Mount Vernon, Charlie Cole, was only able to compete in one event tonight, due to a nagging issue. Being this close to the Sectional, the Mt. Vernon coaches had to make the difficult but right decision to shut him down. Hopefully Cole will bounce back for Sectional, and Sprague will have a great career at DePaul. Star Cougar junior, Everett Bishop, found himself in the same position as Cole after finishing 3rd in both the high jump (6'0") and 100 (11.16). He had to walk off the track in the 300 hurdles and was not able to compete in the 4x400. With the absence of Bishop, other Cougars stepped up as needed to contribute for a great team effort. Junior, Braylon Mumaugh, stepped up in the distance events, out-placing his seed in both the 1600 and 800. Mumaugh was seeded 2nd in both events, but ended up Conference Champ in both running 4:19.62 and 1:55.71. Junior, Bryce Cotterman, made the 1600 a 1-2 finish for the Cougars with his hard fought battle and final 100 meter sprint to finish in 4:22.32 passing Pendleton's Benson Davis. Cotterman also finished 4th in the 3200 in 9:43.46. The Cougar throwers were dominant, finishing 1st and 2nd in the discus, and 1st and 3rd in the shot put. Sophomore thrower, Von Quigley, was a double Conference Champ winning the discus in 169'9", and the shot put in 53'1". Senior thrower, Memphis Blevens threw a PR in the discus of 157'8" to finish 2nd, beating his 3rd place seed. In the shot put, Blevens finished 3rd with a throw of 44'8.5". Junior, Garrett Jack, had a great meet bouncing back from an unfortunate false start in the County 400 last week. Jack, got the job done tonight, winning the 400, and breaking his own school record, running a time of 49.89. He also finished 4th in the 100 (11.30), vastly improving on his seed of 8th place. Jack, along with Mumaugh, Ian Erwin, and David Wasson also finished runner-up in the 4x400 with a time of 3:29.33. Senior, Ian Erwin, also contributed, picking up extra points in the 200 finishing 4th in a time 23.22, and anchoring the 4x100 to a 5th place finish (45.18) which also consisted of Gavin Smith, Om Aggarwal, and Kaden Tompkins. Senior, David Wasson, like Erwin, stepped up in the 800 finishing 5th, 3 spots better than his seed, with a season best time of 2:02.20. Wasson also anchored the 6th place 4x800 team consisting of Hunter Wiswell, Otto Sickels, and Maeson Robinson. In the pole vault, both senior, Liam Taylor, and sophomore, Will Parker scored points, with Taylor finishing 3rd and Parker finishing 4th vaulting 12'6" and 11'6" respectively. Junior, Nick Ryba, ran two pr's in the hurdles finishing 8th in the 110 hurdles (16.72), and 10th in the 300 hurdles (45.21). Sophomore, Otto Sickels, ran a one second pr in the 3200 to pick up extra points with his 6th place finish (9:57.41). Also competing well, and running pr's were Jaxon Conaway 400 (54.84) finishing 12th, Hunter Wiswell 800 (2:03.60) finishing 8th overall and winning his heat, and Michael Peterson 1600 (4:45.18) finishing 11th.
