The GC Cougars tennis team battled through another thriller Wednesday night against Shelbyville Golden Bears, with the match coming down to the final moments before GC secured the victory. At No. 2 doubles, Anna McQueeney and Chloe Kiser earned the only quick win of the night, cruising to a 6-1, 6-3 victory. No. 2 singles featured a back-and-forth battle as Chaille Frye competed in a highly competitive match before falling 5-7, 4-6. At No. 1 singles, Kate Gilkison fought through several deuce points in a hard-fought contest before dropping a 2-6, 2-6 decision. The remaining matches would decide the outcome. At No. 3 singles, Audrey Marcum captured the opening set 6-3, while at No. 1 doubles, Lauren Page and Lucy Stewart also took the first set by a 6-3 score. With the team score hanging in the balance, both matches had to be finished strong for GC to pull out the win. Page and Stewart dropped the second set 5-7 just as Marcum held off a comeback attempt to secure a 7-5 second set and even the team score at 2-2. The deciding third set at No. 1 doubles delivered plenty of drama. GC trailed 4-5 before Lucy Stewart held serve to tie the set at 5-5. The Cougars then broke Shelbyville’s serve to move ahead 6-5, and Lauren Page closed out the match by holding serve for a 7-5 victory and the team win for GC. In JV action, Lila Wagner picked up the lone victory for GC with a strong 8-2 performance. The Cougars fell 1-5 in the JV match.
