Greenfield Central dropped a hard-fought game 5-4 to #1 ranked Kouts Saturday afternoon at the Bullpen Tournaments Indiana Series, falling to 2-2 on the season. The Mustangs, last year's state runner-up in 1A, showed why they are the top-ranked team in the state — but the Cougars made them earn every out. Kouts jumped on Greenfield Central early, plating five runs in the first two innings. Brady Martin got the start but it was Hunter Robling who stepped in and made an immediate statement in his first varsity appearance, shutting the door and delivering one of the most impressive relief outings of the young season. Robling worked 4.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just 3 hits while striking out 7, keeping the Cougars within striking distance. Greenfield Central showed plenty of fight offensively, collecting 9 hits on the day. The Cougars mounted a 3-run rally in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to one, but couldn't push the tying run across in the final frame. Hayden Zellers led the offense going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a triple. Gavin Markus added a double and an RBI, while Ethan Ortwein went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Henry Close also chipped in with a hit and an RBI.
