Cougars Open Season with 11-3 Victory Over Lapel

Greenfield Central 11, Lapel 3 The Greenfield Central Cougars opened their season in impressive fashion Monday night, defeating Lapel 11-3. Starting pitcher Steven Walker set the tone from the mound, turning in a dominant outing over five innings. Walker allowed just 3 hits and 2 earned runs while walking 3 and striking out 8. Henry Close came on in relief and worked 2 solid innings, giving up 1 earned run on 1 hit with 3 strikeouts. Offensively, the Cougars collected 6 hits as a team. Hayden Zellers led the way going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a walk. Gavin Markus also went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Hayden Kidd drove in a run and drew 2 walks, while Walker Miller crossed the plate twice. Close also contributed at the plate with a hit. The highlight of the night may have belonged to freshman Jack Herrin, who recorded his first career high school hit — a clutch double that drove in 2 runs. The Cougars kick off their season with the win, moving to 1-0 as they head to Frankton tomorrow night for a 5:30 PM first pitch.
