FINAL: Mt. Vernon 64, Greenfield-Central 50 The Cougars’ season came to an end Saturday night in the Sectional Championship, falling 64–50 to Mt. Vernon after a competitive battle. Offensively, Greenfield-Central shot the ball very efficiently throughout the night. The Cougars finished 46% from the field and were outstanding from beyond the arc, hitting 6 of 14 threes (43%), keeping the offense productive when they were able to get shots up. GC also moved the ball well and took care of possessions, recording 12 assists while committing just 8 turnovers, which created quality looks throughout the game. However, the Cougars struggled to generate enough possessions and free-throw opportunities to fully capitalize on their shooting efficiency, limiting the overall scoring output. Defensively, Greenfield-Central did a solid job controlling second chances, holding Mt. Vernon to 10 offensive rebounds, and disrupted some of their ball movement. But the Marauders were able to find efficient scoring opportunities in the half court, shooting 53% from the field while attempting a high volume of threes (20 of 45 shots) and converting 35% from deep, which proved to be a key factor in the game. Clay Mullins led the Cougars with 17 points. Despite the loss, this senior class leaves a strong legacy. After a season where expectations were lowered from the outside, they proved everyone wrong — finishing with 12 wins and reaching the Sectional Championship game for the third consecutive year. Their leadership, resilience, and commitment helped keep the program competing at a high level. A season built on toughness, growth, and pride in the Cougar basketball program.
