The Lady Cougars played Richmond High School tonight in their opening match of sectional play. The 6-0 victory gives the team another ‘first’ for many players. Having only senior Emily Davidson ever experiencing a win in sectional play, the ladies got after it to make sure the team made it to the rematch against Mt Vernon Thursday night at 5:30pm.
After a sluggish start, the girls got it going late in the first half. Kelsi McLaughlin rifled a shot that was saved, but Anne Marie Dekeyser cleaned it up to put the Cougars up 1-0. Then with 85 seconds in the first half, Anne Marie and Kelsi teamed up again with a give and go that Kelsi booted into the side netting for a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The second half found our Lady Cougars scoring three goals in 8 minutes. Gladys Rodriguez fought to win a tough ball along the sideline and hit Dekeyser at the top of the box, who slotted it in the upper 90 for a 3-0 lead. Then a gorgeous five pass combo moved the ball from the defensive third up to the offensive third, as Cora Bishop hit Anne Marie Dekeyser who slotted a streaking Kelsi McLaughlin. A deft one touch allowed Kelsi to put away her second goal of the game. Kelsi scored her third of the game off a pass from Kennedy Trapp. The last goal was a nice shot from Kennedy Trapp after receiving a throw in from Paisley Slunaker. The shutout was preserved by Schyler Slunaker and Hannah Skene in goal.
The Cougars will now play Mt Vernon on Thursday night at 5:30p in the first semifinal game of the bracket. Mt Vernon beat New Palestine 2-1 to set up the rematch. Earlier this year, the Marauders beat the Cougars 5-2 in conference play. See you all Thursday night.
